The TRICARE dental program is a health maintenance organization (HMO) based health insurance program. Sponsors are able to enroll by using the Beneficiary Web portal. If you are a current member, you are eligible for coverage at any time. You can also choose to extend your enrollment.
Your beneficiary is a member or a family member of an active-duty service member who is receiving benefits from your TRICARE insurance plan. There are many ways to qualify to become a beneficiary of the TRICARE dental plan. If you are currently covered by another health insurance plan, you can still enroll under the TRICARE program and receive the benefits. A list of qualified beneficiaries is available from your local military health care provider or you can check with your primary care physician. To become a beneficiary, you must be eligible for the TRICARE program, have an active-duty service member or dependents, meet income requirements, and be enrolled in the TRICARE HMO. You must meet income requirements to qualify as a beneficiary. Some TRICARE dental benefit plans are not based on family income. In this case, you will need to have at least the TRICARE maximum income to be eligible to be a beneficiary.
Service members may be eligible to enroll for dental plans that include: full coverage or partial coverage. Full coverage will include regular dental checkups, root canal treatment and preventative dental services. Full coverage is usually more expensive than the partial coverage plan. For those that only want routine cleanings, then the partial coverage option may be the best option for you.
If you are a beneficiary of TRICARE dental benefits, you may also qualify for coverage for: emergency procedures. If your dental emergency arises, you can be rest assured that your health care provider will be notified. Most hospitals have emergency rooms where you can be seen in an emergency. This option is usually a fee-for-service system. In the event that the emergency has been attended to by your medical provider, and you are safe and sound, the emergency room staff will take care of the remainder of the procedure or treatment.
